Who would have thought that the lightweight fabric typically worn by ballerinas would become a fashion trend in its own right? Made of fibres, including silk, nylon, and rayon, tulle was more commonly used for veils, wedding gowns, and ballet tutus.

Tulle was named after a southern central French city. It was well known as a production centre of silk and lace in the 18th century. Tulle netting first appeared in the Parisian ballet costume.

These days, tulle have made their way onto the runway, with the likes of Gucci, Dior, and Saint Laurent incorporating it into their designs. A subtler alternative to lace, this fabric gives you low-key flair without the overt sultriness.

Here’s how you can get on top of the tulle trend:

  1. Play with Textures

Tulle and velvet make an unlikely yet perfectly dramatic combination. Perfect for a night out when you’re dressing to impress.

2. Toughen Up With Metallics

If you thought tulle is the prissy fabric for delicate wallflowers, think again. The grownup tulle is anything but sugar and spice. With a ripped tee and hardware embellishments like a spiked choker or chained boots, even tulle can look badass.

3. Dress Down With a Plain Tee

Tulle on the runway got a casual dressing down with wedge heels and plain T-shirts. Likewise, tulle on the high street is typically seen in the form of midi skirts, and paired with rugged elements such as a distressed T-shirt or denim jackets.

4. Go Noir

Christian Dior went dark and dramatic for his Spring/Summer 2017 show at Paris Fashion Week. With a sleek A-line cutting, a tulle maxi dress looks equally appropriate for a night out and a work function.

5. Shake Up Your Colour Palette

Tulle in electric-blue? A legit head-turner. Go one step further and layer your tulle like a pro (such as this street fashionista) by mixing fabrics like knits or silk, or playing with shape and form with flared sleeves and an oversize cardigan.
