Pastel hues are always a staple for spring, but this season, they aren’t limited to flowy sundresses and feminine accessories. 2018’s iteration pairs the muted color scheme with structured, even masculine, shapes, like sharp blazers and tailored slacks. But the one take on the trend that we’re really loving is sporty pastels.

At first glance, colors like millennial pink, lavender, and mint might seem too soft and gentle for sports activities which often require some raw strength. Instead, we’re used to basic neutrals like black and white, or maybe bright colors like hot pink or royal blue. But colors shouldn’t be shoehorned into certain functions, and in our opinion, pastels can be both pretty and powerful.

Looks like major sports brands agree, with new pastel releases like Puma’s ballet-inspired En Pointe collection and New Balance’s Classic 574 Pastel Pack:

Read on for some of our sporty pastel picks!

Gym Gear

Keep on your toes with pastel-hued running and training shoes. These picks might look dainty, but trust us — they’re still designed for comfortable support and ultra-durability.

Pastels will also breathe new life into your gym clothes and help you reach your fitness goals in style. Light-hued sports bras and tank tops won’t only look refreshing among the sea of blacks and brights at your spinning class, but will feel refreshing too — as you’ll recall from your grade school science classes, lighter colors absorb less heat.

Make sure the material’s sweat-wicking and quick-drying to make the most of this property. And if you’re looking for a bit more edge, try out patterned pastels in prints and colorblocking.

Athleisure Attitude

Of course, you don’t actually need to be doing sports to rock sporty pastels. Thanks to the rise of athleisure, your fave sports brands have also come up with more lifestyle-oriented takes on the trend.

These sneakers aren’t meant for use in the gym, but they’ve got the high-level cushioning and durability that their performance counterparts are known for. The muted colors will also perfectly match your Instagram feed as it transitions into a dreamy summer color palette.

There are tons of options when it comes to pastel athleisure apparel (although as you can see from our picks below, we’re still pretty obsessed with millennial pink in particular). Adidas Originals has colorways in pale pinks and yellows for their lifestyle clothing, and Queen Bey’s Ivy Park has quickly become one of our fave brands for trendy activewear. Even non-sports brands have jumped in the game with cropped hooodies and on-trend track pants.
